What is the most important thing I can do to help my child learn to read?
The best thing you can do to help your child is to read to them every night. Reading to or with your child can make a big difference. It is critical to your child’s success. Make sure to set time aside each day for reading. Reading aloud to your child is a perfect way to make reading fun and enjoyable.
What kind of activities can I do to help my child learn how to read?
Playing word games is an excellent way to help your child learn to read. You can find some interactive games on this website if you click on the “Useful Links” page.
You can also play games at home, in the car, at the store, etc. You can label common items around your house so that your child can see the word written. For example, here are some examples of word labels you can place around your house: Bed, bath, door, table, chair, sink, rug, etc. Then, have your child walk around the house and read the word labels.
Another fun game is to buy or make flashcards with words on them. You can go to the “Flash Card” page on this website and print out pre-made flashcards to use with your child.
Playing BINGO with letters or words can also be fun for your child. It helps them to hear and identify letters and words.
When my child comes to a word they don’t know, what should they do?
When your child does not know a word, there are many strategies they can try.
- If reading a book, try to look at the pictures for clues.
- Try to sound out the word
- Look at the beginning letter
- Look at the end letter
- Skip the word and try to read the rest of the sentence. Can they figure out what word would make sense?
